Implement Cybersecurity Solution - Davey Water Products
Davey Water Products Case Study
Business Name: Davey Water Products
Industry: Manufacturing
No. of Employees: 300 Employees
Company Overview
For more than 80 years, Davey Water Products has been manufacturing products to service the domestic water pumping, water treatment, and swimming pool and spa industries. In recent years, Davey Water Products has expanded their focus and product portfolio to include the commercial pumping, irrigation, and commercial pool markets.
The Challenge
IT Issues The Company Was Experiencing:
- Limited confidence in the organisation’s capacity to identify attacks, especially ransomware
- Concerns about the ramifications of a data breach, both financial and reputational
- Lack of visibility and control over users’ internet usage and device management
As a company that was expanding its product portfolio and staff, Davey Water Products recognised they needed a more sophisticated cybersecurity strategy that would keep their business safe.
“We were concerned the business could suffer a malware attack or serious data breach. We’re well aware of the financial and reputational damage a data breach can cause in terms of the loss of customer data, critical business information and financial records, not to mention the financial and reputational damage. As the business continued to expand, we knew we had to reevaluate our cybersecurity strategy,” said David Ellison, IT administrator, Davey Water Products.
Ellison was particularly concerned about the rising threat of ransomware attacks and felt Davey’s existing endpoint protection solution was not adequately protecting the business.
“The solution we were using lacked a good web filtering function and comprehensive auditing features,” said Ellison. “It had also become clear to us that there was a serious lack of visibility and control of employees’ internet and device usage. We knew these shortcomings made us a pretty easy target to attack.”
According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Australians have lost over $600,000 to phishing attacks and over $74,000 to ransomware attacks in 2019 so far.
“You hear stories on the news all the time about businesses like ours falling victim to a breach. We wanted to make sure we weren’t one of them,” said Ellison.
The Solution
How Did We Address The Challenges?
Davey was facing two main cybersecurity challenges – the threat of a malware attack and a lack of endpoint protection and visibility.
To address this, Davey deployed Sophos Intercept X Endpoint and Sophos Mobile with Interscales assistance. The solution was implemented and in place within 2 weeks. The business also implemented a mobile device compliance policy.
“We don’t know enough about cyberattacks to detect one ourselves, which is why we chose a holistic Sophos solution that can detect and thwart attacks before and at the point of entry,” said Ellison.
The Outcomes
What Are The Benefits Of Working With Sophos?
Increased visibility – Davey has heightened visibility over user behavior, including insight into what links they’re clicking and at what point they may be exposing the network to a threat.
Greater threat detection and elimination – Sophos’ Synchronized Security solution has allowed Davey to detect and prevent threats prior to the point of entry. Sophos Mobile has ensured that users are protected, no matter where they choose to work from.
Peace of mind – the business now has a sense of confidence and relief knowing its endpoint protection solution is working and actively protecting Davey from a range of cyberattacks. “Knowing we have so much visibility over our network gives us peace of mind. We can now take adequate action to prevent cyberattacks and pinpoint where the vulnerability came from,” said Ellison.
What Should You Look For In A Cybersecurity Partner?
Davey knew their team, focused on growing the business and servicing customers, would struggle without support. Therefore, Davey appointed Interscale, for IT support. The team at Interscale manages the Sophos solutions Davey has deployed and actions any security alerts raised.
With the support of Sophos and Interscale, Davey Water Products now has a holistic cybersecurity strategy in place that provides visibility, endpoint protection, and most importantly: peace of mind.
